As a new player, I lost my 1st Drake to a low sec gate camp. I was intensely emotionally gripped by the lose. A computer game no less, galvanized all my senses.
Eve is extremely satisfying because of its ability too allow for consequence, and all the real life ramifications that follow. Virtual reality yes, emphasis on the reality.
Meaning intensifies when that which we value is at stake too be experienced and or compromised as the case may be.
The shock to the Care bear mentality is that the game of "Eve", is actually an extension of hard reality. And not a short term, insulating distraction from it, or even a full escape from it.
The feedback loop in Eve is intact and pulsing with each gate jump, Pvp action and market order transaction.
Reality constantly demands that we engage, adapt participate and our deepest sensibilities know that we cannot demand 'fairness' on our own terms at a whim, however we attempt to rationalize.
Life can be intensely brutal for people and the fear of not being able to counter this with some sense of control creates a huge underlying emotional current for many people, including many of Eve's subscribers.
Games are about increasing and securing control, to a very significant degree. The Eve Care bear when divested of this assumption of automatic access too control, is deeply shocked.
Many Eve players just want the feeling of some sense of control and success, within a harsh reality that acts to dis-empower them. People want resolution on their terms.
And here is the interesting thing: The experiences we deeply value, the intense memorable ones, they are found within the context of a perilous universe, just like Eve.
A universe where we must use our intent to create control and success, from an uncertain outcome. An act of faith and willpower... within a game... just like in real life, no less.
There is a lot of living/Gaming to get to the point where you not only stop fighting that fact, but learn to adapt, admit you in fact do have the power to make the attempt, and potentially relax enough to actually love the extreme and deeply satisfying challenge, that is: Eve
